Women's Rights Now
Women's Rights Now has been a collaborative project with the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives, implemented in Imvepi Refugee Settlement in Northern Uganda. During our baseline research, we found that many refugee and host community women had encountered situations in which they were misled on the details of their tenancy agreements, which jeopardize their homes and land that they rely on for their financial livelihood. The CFLI entrusted CAFAR Foundation to work with women in the settlement, and educate them on ways that they can defend themselves legally as it pertains to their rights as a tenant in Uganda.

CAFAR Staff and local facilitators helped to bring awareness to women's rights in the settlement and empower them by training them on their rights as a land owner/renter in Uganda. The fundamentals of the project included

-
Livelihood training for women and men, training selected individuals in financial literacy, and creating savings groups that encourage members to save for future income generating entrepreneurial opportunities.

Facilitated a paralegal advisor to train groups of women on their rights as a tenant or owner, so they have the knowledge and tools to defend themselves in a legal dispute over land

Mobilized and trained local refugee acting groups in forum theatre to perform acts about women's land rights to community members.
