ACTING FOR CHANGE

Buhuuka, marked by severe impoverishment, has witnessed heightened tensions following oil discovery, leading to forced relocations and exacerbating community disputes over land and resources. Consequently, there has been a surge in gender-based violence, sex work, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) challenges, further deepening vulnerabilities within the community. In response, CAFAR has launched an ongoing initiative that works closely with marginalized groups, including sex workers, fishermen, and unemployed adolescents, equipping them with community theatre and public speaking skills to create and perform impactful skits in overlooked spaces such as bars, boda stages, and lakeside areas. These performances serve as powerful tools for advocacy and education, dispelling myths surrounding SRHR, promoting awareness, and fostering gender equality. Beyond raising awareness, this initiative actively nurtures safer spaces for dialogue and disclosure, enabling community-led discussions that challenge harmful social norms and empower individuals to advocate for their rights. As the project continues to evolve, CAFAR remains committed to expanding its reach and deepening its impact, ensuring that critical SRHR information and support services become more accessible to those who need them most.

"Performing these stories, helps others like me understand that there are places to get help or ask questions about health, and challenges, things that we don’t usually find out about”
